The Electoral Commission is undertaking the update of the National Voters’ Register for purposes of the 2020/2021 General Elections. The general update exercise commenced on Thursday 21st November 2019 and was scheduled to close tomorrow, Wednesday 11th December 2019.
General Update of the National Voters’ Register, Thursday 21st November – Wednesday 11th December 2019
In accordance with Article 61 (1)(e) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda (as amended), and Sections 18 and 19 of the Electoral Commission Act (Cap 140), the Electoral Commission will conduct a General Update of the National Voters’ Register, in preparation for the 2020-2021 General Elections.
In preparation for the 2020-2021 General Elections, the Electoral Commission will conduct a nationwide exercise as follows:
- Verify the particulars of voters on the National Voters’ Register at the village level; and,
- Identify all Persons with Disability (PWDs) in each village.
The verification and identification exercise will be conducted in all villages throughout Uganda from Monday 21st October to Monday 28th October 2019.
The Electoral Commission has noted with concern that upon conclusion of Parliamentary and Local Government by-elections in Hoima and Kaabong Districts, a lot of talk and social media reports have focused on the by-election in Hoima District.
The Electoral Commission has approved the programme for the by-election of District Woman Representatives to Parliament for Hoima and Kaabong districts and elections in Lower Local Government Councils in the two districts
The Electoral Commission has appointed Thursday, 25th July, 2019 as the polling day for Elections of Interim District Chairperson in Bugweri District (which was created out of Iganga District) and Kikuube District (which was created out of Hoima District).
The above two districts came into effect on 1st July 2018.
Voting shall be by Electoral College and secret ballot and will be conducted at the headquarters of the respective new district, starting at 9:00am.
