Condemnation of Election-related Violence During the Nomination of Candidates for Local Government Councils By-elections in Bukedea District
The Electoral Commission has noted a report of alleged assault against one of the aspirants for the by-election of District Chairperson, Bukedea.
The assault allegedly took place on Tuesday 6th June 2023, as the said aspirant approached the Office of the Returning Officer, Bukedea, to present himself for nomination as a candidate for the by-election of District Chairperson, Bukedea.
The Electoral Commission strongly condemns this act as intolerant, unacceptable and criminal because it infringes on the rights of citizens to freely participate in electoral activities. Such violent conduct also damages our democratic and electoral processes.
The Commission urges the Uganda Police Force to expeditiously investigate the alleged acts of violence and take appropriate action against the perpetrators.
The Commission further urges candidates, their agents and supporters to refrain from any acts of aggression and violence and comply with the law by observing electoral guidelines in order to achieve peaceful by-elections.
The Electoral Commission would like to assure members of the public, of its commitment to ensuring that these by-elections and future elections are held in peaceful conditions.
