The Electoral Commission concluded the nomination of candidates for the following elective positions at Parliamentary level:
- Directly-elected members of Parliament
- District Woman Representative to Parliament
- Representative of Persons with Disability to Parliament
We wish to report that the exercise was concluded smoothly across the country. The Commission has started receiving the returns, and will avail the statistics of the exercise in due course.
I wish to thank the participating political parties and organizations, nominated candidates, their agents and supporters, for complying with the guidelines for nomination, especially access to the venues.
I wish to thank our election officials for their dedication which resulted into a generally smooth exercise.
Finally, I wish to thank the Uganda Police Force for providing a secure environment for the exercise.
Harmonisation of Campaign Programmes and Commencement of Campaigns
The period starting 4th December 2015 until 6th December 2015 has been set aside for purpose of harmonizing the candidates’ campaign programmes submitted by nominated candidates.
Campaigns for Parliamentary Elections shall commence on Monday 7th December 2015 until 16th February 2016, and polling will take place on Thursday 18th February 2016.
However, the period 15th – 23rd December 2015, has been blocked to allow Parliament attend to critical national issues.
During this campaign period, candidates shall not use or publish any language or defamatory words, which incite public disorder, hatred, violence or which threatens war.
The Commission urges all candidates, their agents and the public to adhere to set rules and regulations guiding the campaign period.
Candidates and their supporters are further urged to refrain from activities that endanger the electoral environment. This includes cutting of trees and tree branches as well as littering. Let us be responsible in our conduct during campaigns and protect the environment.
