Press Statement on the Extension of the General Update of the National Voters Register 2025

STATEMENT BY THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION, ON THE GENERAL UPDATE OF THE NATIONAL VOTERS REGISTER

On behalf of the Commission, I welcome you to this press conference, whose aim is to appraise the Country on the progress of the update exercise of the National Voters Register, which is supposed to conclude today, and also inform the public on the way forward.

General Update of the National Voters’ Register, 20th January – 10th February 2025

In compliance with Article 61 (1)(e) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, and Section 20 of the Electoral Commission Act (Cap 176), the Electoral Commission will conduct a General Update of the National Voters’ Register, in preparation for the 2025-2026 General Elections.

The General Update of the National Voters’ Register will be conducted at update stations as shall be publicised for each parish throughout Uganda, from Monday 20th January 2025 to Monday 10th February 2025, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, on each day, including weekends.

Display of Lists of Demarcated Local Government Council Electoral Areas for the 2025/2026 General Elections, 13th - 20th January 2025

 

In preparation for the 2025/2026 General Elections, the Electoral Commission conducted an exercise from 6th – 16th August 2024, to demarcate electoral areas for representation at Local Governments in the cities and districts of Uganda.

The demarcation of Local Government Council electoral areas is the process of drawing and defining the boundaries of areas of representation for Directly-elected Councilors and Women Councilors forming ⅓ of Local Government Councils.

Adjustment of Commencement of the Exercise for General Update of the National Voters’ Register

The Electoral Commission is mandated under Article 61 (1)(e) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, 1995, (as amended), and Sections 18 and 20 of the Electoral Commission Act (Cap 140) to compile, maintain, revise, and update the National Voters Register.

In preparation for the 2025/2026 General Elections, the Electoral Commission released a Roadmap wherein the update of the National Voters Register was scheduled to commence on 3rd January 2025 until 24th January 2025.

The Electoral Commission Uganda, through its Social Responsibility Initiative, is proud to be one of the key sponsors of the Kampala Disability Festival, taking place today, November 16, at the KCCA Gardens under the theme “Celebrating Abilities.” This event sheds light on the challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), particularly wheelchair users, in accessing vital infrastructure in Kampala, while also celebrating their resilience and achievements.

Campaign and Polling dates of Candidates for the District Woman Representative to Parliament for Kisoro District and other Local Government Councils By-election in Kisoro District

The Electoral Commission has appointed 1st Friday to 12th Tuesday November, 2024, as the period for candidate’s campaign meetings for the by-election of Directly Elected Member of Parliament for Kisoro District and other Local Government Councils By-election in Kisoro District.

During this period, candidates shall not use or publish any language or defamatory words, that incite disorder, hatred, violence, or which threaten war.

Nationwide Exercise for Identification and Mapping of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) on the National Voters Register (NVR), 4 th – 13 th November 2024

A. Introduction

The Electoral Commission is mandated under the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, 1995 (as amended) and the Electoral Commission Act, to take measures to ensure that the entire electoral process is as inclusive as possible, and conducted under conditions of freedom and fairness to, among others, enable Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to vote without any hindrance.

Nomination of Candidates for District Woman Representative to Parliament for Kisoro District and other Local Government Councils By-elections in Kisoro District, 30th – 31st October 2024

In preparation for the by-election of the District Woman Representative to Parliament for Kisoro District and other local Government Councils by-elections, the Electoral Commission appointed Wednesday 30th, and Thursday 31st October 2024 as the dates for the nomination of candidates.

The nomination exercise will be conducted at the District Council Hall, Kisoro District, starting at 9:00 am until 5:00 pm on the above dates.

Display of the National Voters' Register for Parliamentary and Local Government Councils By-elections in Kisoro District, 14th – 23rd October 2024

In preparation for the by-election of the District Woman Representative to Parliament for Kisoro District and Councillors on various Local Government Councils in the district where vacancies exist, the Electoral Commission has appointed 14th October to 23rd October 2024 as the period for display of the National Voters’ Register.

The display of the Voters’ Register shall begin at 8:00 am and end at 6:00 pm each day, including weekends, at each polling stations in Kisoro District.
